My experiences and progress in the Albion College Teacher Education Program

Perspective-taker

Perspective-taker

Music is all about being a perspective-taker. For example, everyday in class I ask students to imagine themselves as the composer of the music we are playing. What was the composer trying to create? Why did he/she write this piece? They have to take on the viewpoint of another person, from another time to affectively perform the music. As an educator, not only do I ask my students to be perspective-takers, I model by example. I understand the value of different viewpoints on everything from general education talk, to specific music classroom management ideas. I know that  by ignoring other points of view, I would just be limiting myself as an educator. Many of the best and most affective tools I use when teaching are ideas and viewpoints I have gathered from other educators and musicians. I know that as a learner-teacher I still have a lot to learn from my own experiences, but I can and do, learn from the experience of others. Being able to have conversations with others of differing perspectives helps open new doors in my own continued education.
