Child and Youth Advocates

Child and youth advocates, desiring a more fair, equitable and democratic society:

When I began my student teaching, I wished to create a classroom environment that involved me being an advocate for my students.  During discussions, and throughout the semester, I tried to create an environment in which students could feel comfortable being themselves and voicing their own opinions without fear of ridicule. Although this took a lot of policing at the beginning, students began to understand the importance of this respect.  During a unit I taught on discrimination and illegal immigration, I made sure to address the definition of discrimination and discriminatory speech so that all students would feel treated fairly.  These actions have helped me to create a more equitable and just classroom, and I would hope that students would carry this with them into the world and the rest of their lives.
