Substandard F

6. RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS TO THE GREATER

COMMUNITY

Participation in professional, local, state, national, and global learning communities, including the ability to:

f.   Participate with professional educators, school personnel, and other stakeholders in collaborative and cooperative planning, decision-making, and implementation, to improve educational systems at all levels.

This substandard addresses a teacher’s ability to communicate with other educators, in and outside their subject area, to improve the level of learning of their students. For secondary music educators, this can mean communicating with general music educators and agreeing on a shared curriculum.

I once worked in a field placement where the teacher’s used the vowels “ta-ta” for quarter note pitches and “ti-ti” for eight note pitches. By using the same curriculum across the grade levels, the students were ensured to continue learning the same concept without the confusion of different terminology.
