Substandard H

5. RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATIONSHIPS TO THE SCHOOL, CLASSROOM, AND STUDENT

Systematic reflection to organize and improve teaching and develop effective relationships, including the ability to:

h.  Participate in the development of individualized plans for students with disabilities (Individual Education Plan (IEP)).

This substandard addresses the teacher’s ability to participate in the development of IEP’s for students with disabilities, adjust classroom instruction, and monitor student progress. Though I have not participated in the development of an IEP, I have been fortunate enough to have had many experiences in helping students with disabilities to perform on instruments with modified instruction. A few of these students include;

A student with a right hand lacking separated fingers to play the trumpet with their left hand on the keys and their right cupping the base of the trumpet’s values.

A student with stunted growth to play the clarinet with the aid of a neck strap.

A student with moderate down syndrome to play the recorder with a modified tray attached to their motorized wheelchair.

I made an effort to plan regular individual check ups with these students to continue modifying and assessing their current progress on their respective instruments.
