Substandard G

Systematic reflection to organize and improve teaching and develop effective relationships, including the ability to:

g.  Interact with parents/guardians using best practices for personal and technology-based communication, to maximize student learning at school, home, and in the local community;

This substandard addresses the teacher’s use of school implemented technology-based parent/teacher support systems. These support systems are designed to open up the lines of communication between parents and teacher and give each party multiple ways in which to communicate with each other. For the Pennfield Band Program, there are many different means by which parents can communicate with the band directors. Pennfield School District uses both Moodle and Zang!e for attendance, grading documentation, and assignment collection. Parents have access to Zang!e and can see their child’s attendance, overall class grades, and individual class grades for any class their student is enrolled in. Listed on the individual class pages are also the email addresses and office phone numbers for parent’s use as well – another form of appropriate, effective communication. The same information can also be found on the Pennfield School District’s home page.

Pennfield also have its own organizational page listed on the Pennfield School District main page. Here, parents and students can find resources such as  a downloadable version of the band program handbook, printable versions of the practice cards (logs we have the students keep of their practice time at home – signed and turned in every Friday for a letter grade), fingering charts, music recordings, etc. This website also hosts a Google calendar with the band events of all the ensembles (marching, concert, pep).

One other additional source of communication is the Pennfield Bands Facebook page. Though the directors strongly discourage parents and students from using the Facebook page for formal messaging, it can be useful in reminding parents and students of upcoming deadlines (fundraisers, order forms, dress rehearsals, etc.).

Below is a link to the Pennfield Bands organizational page of the Pennfield School District page. It’s a good reference page if you’re looking to create one for your own program!
