Substandard F

Knowledge of subject matter and pedagogy with reference to the MCF and other state sponsored resources, for consistent and equitable learning in Michigan schools, including the ability to:

f. Evaluate, adapt, and modify instructional strategies, technologies, and other educational resources to enhance the learning of each student;

This substandard addresses the teacher’s ability to improve their own instructional effectiveness through evaluation, adaptation, and  modification of their instructional strategies; this all in the aim of bettering and enhancing the learning of each student.

As a music teacher, I bring technology into the classroom on a regular basis. But one means of technology you may not expect to see a music teacher utilize on a regular basis in a video camera. And not for the purposes of reviewing the ensemble — for reviewing myself.

I am constantly evaluating my own performance in the classroom. If my students cannot understand what I am saying or if I find that I am not lecturing the material in an effective manner, I find video taping myself and reviewing the film afterward can be extraordinarily helpful. I always keep a pen and pad of paper handy while reviewing my video; I write down things I liked, things that need work, and ideas I should elaborate on. By doing this, I can better myself for my students, who can in turn better themselves through improved instruction.
