Knowledge of subject matter and pedagogy with reference to the MCF and other state sponsored resources, for consistent and equitable learning in Michigan schools, including the ability to:

e. Engage students in activities that demonstrate the purpose and function of subject matter to make connections to the world beyond the classroom and enhance the relationship and relevance to a global society;

This substandard addresses the teacher’s ability to consistently plan and implement¬†activities¬†that engage students with the purpose and function of making connections to the world beyond the classroom and enhance their relationship with the global¬†society.

In my 6th grade band classroom, we put on a concert this fall with a “music around the world” theme to it. In the concert, we included the selections such as International National Anthems (“O Canada,” “Hatikvah”), as well as cultural songs (“La Cucaracha”) and songs that bring about national pride (“America, the Beautiful,” and “Prelude and March”). We spent much time in rehearsals discussing the importance of playing these musical selections with the correct style and influence, giving them a proper representation on the stage.
