Substandard J

Facilitation of learning and achievement of all students (in accordance with the SBE Universal Education Vision and Principles), including the ability to:

j. Design, adopt, implement, and advocate for accommodations including assistive communicative devices, assistive technologies, and multiple strategies to enhance learning opportunities according to each student’s needs;

This substandard addresses the teacher’s ability to design, adopt, implement, and advocate for accommodations for students in and outside the classroom. This can happen many different ways in the music classroom, but a few of the ways I have accommodated this substandard is through the implication of the following sources;

Private lessons

Participating in additional ensembles (in and outside the school system and community)

Attending music-based summer programs and camps (Michigan-based camps include Blue Lake Fine Arts and Interlochen)

The use of tuners and metronones in and outside the classroom

Again, there are more opportunities and resources available, but these are ones that in the last four months I have bought and advocated in my classrooms.
