Substandard B

An understanding and appreciation of general and liberal arts including English, literature, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural or physical sciences, and the arts, and the ability to:

b. Understand and appreciate free inquiry in English, literature, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, natural or physical sciences, and the arts;

This standard addresses the ability of the teacher to initiate creative uses of free inquiry and the exchange of ideas across multiple content areas. In 5th grade band here at Pennfield, we use the Standard of Excellence: book 1 with our beginning students. This book provides opportunities for students to “become the composers” of their own song within the contexts of the text. The last two measures of the eight measure song are left blank, as well as title and composer space, and the students are given the guidelines in which they can compose the last two measures. Once the student has completed the song (which I assigned as homework the day previous), I took volunteers to play their compositions in class the next day. We also took turns playing all of our compositions at the same time and listening to how they were different, as well as the same (same rhythmic pattern, many different pitched notes)

Following are examples of student work from the text mentioned above, as well as the original blank text.
