The Body Orchestra

In this lesson, students explore non-traditional rhythmic notation, as well as explore the idea of performing in sections like an orchestra. I chose five motions with a sound effect (ex: pulling your earlobes while saying “ding dong”) and had the students practice each on the individual slides. Then I created a simple pattern utilizing two of the motions.

After a couple of those, I mixed in as many as four motions to a pattern. With advanced students, you can assign sections (ex: this half of the room is tap-tap, this half is aaa-choo!) and perform as a compartmentalized ensemble. I am in the middle of teaching this lesson with my students and already they are asking for more! I also used this with my K-2 Special Education students and they absolutely lit up!
