Habits of Mind

Listed below are the “Habits of Mind”expectations of the Albion College Fritz Shurmur Education Department. These expectations are expect to be upheld by all of the department’s students and are necessary factors in the development of future teachers. The department feels that these expectations make very clear the basis for creating well-rounded future teachers, as well as future teachers who are better prepared to enter the teaching world upon graduation.

Habits of Mind

Throughout your experience in the Albion College Education Department, Shurmur Education Institute, and this class, you will be expected to develop yourselves as:

  1. teacher-scholars:  curious, critically thinking risk-takers and problem-solvers
  2. learner-teachers: thoughtful and caring, open and eager to know and to be known and to respect self and others
  3. perspective-takers: seeking out, valuing and incorporating different viewpoints and positions about learners, learning , teaching and subject matter
  4. youth advocates: desiring a more fair, equitable and democratic society
  5. ethically-grounded deliberators:  living and working with integrity.

Your classroom attitude should reflect these and other personal and professional attributes.”
